A US state has just approved a pro-life monument outside its Capitol building to commemorate the unborn lives lost to abortion before Roe v. Wade was repealed last year.
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has signed a bill granting permission for a monument to memorialise the unborn babies lost to abortion in the state before the US Supreme Court’s 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade.
The “monument to the unborn” will be placed outside the Arkansas state Capitol building. Pro-life groups will be consulted as part of the design process. The memorial will be privately funded.
Arkansas, like other US states, is now allowed to determine its abortion law. The state had previously approved an abortion ban (apart from when the mother’s safety is at risk) in 2019, which came into effect when the Supreme Court repealed Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Pro-abortion Democrats opposed the building of a pro-life memorial outside the Arkansas Capitol.
It is estimated that over 63 million unborn babies were aborted since the passing of Roe v. Wade in 1973.
But thousands of unborn lives have already been saved because of last year’s decision allowing US states to decide their abortion laws. The rate of abortion in Texas is said to have fallen by up to 97%, as reported by SPUC.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “This pro-life initiative, recognising unborn lives as lives, sends an important and timely message. Every life, including unborn lives, has an inherent right to life – a right previously subverted by Roe v. Wade.
“While abortions still take place in the United States, 2022 was a pivotal year for the unborn. 2023 will see thousands more unborn babies live. That can only be a good thing.
“Pro-abortion ideologues will no doubt protest that a pro-life monument is to be placed in such a prominent position. This memorial strikes at the heart of their anti-life ideology that has for decades denied the rights and humanity of millions of unborn children.”
