Yesterday, 19 March, pro-lifers from around the UK gathered outside the Houses of Parliament in London to peacefully demonstrate against abortion decriminalisation. MPs and other passersby got the chance to hear SPUC’s strong message in response to Dame Diana Johnson’s pro-abortion amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill.
The peaceful demonstration, organised by The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC), was well-attended by people of all ages.
Some members of the public also joined in when they chanced on the demonstration against Dame Johnon’s amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill that would decriminalise abortion up to birth. For more information, click here.
Pro-lifers of all backgrounds held banners and placards that read, “MPs Vote No to Abortion Until Birth.”
William Currie, SPUC’s Digital Editor who attended the demonstration, said it “was encouraging to be around so many SPUC supporters, some of whom travelled a considerable distance to make their feelings clear… The general feeling was one of camaraderie and solidarity”.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “It’s vital that pro-lifers and other concerned citizens send an unequivocal message to MPs that abortion decriminalisation is unwanted and poses the greatest threat to mothers and their unborn children since the passing of the 1967 Abortion Act.
“Dame Johnson’s proposed amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill would remove all deterrents to late-term abortions, especially the use of abortion pills, which can result in serious complications including sepsis and heavy bleeding when used over the current limit.
“Far from safeguarding women, the amendment would expose them even further to the physical and psychological harms inherent in abortion, as well as lead to the deaths of thousands more viable unborn children who would otherwise be born.
“SPUC was gratified to see so many pro-life men and women stand up outside Parliament in defence of the safety and rights of mothers and their babies. It’s time that MPs show the same care and conviction that we saw yesterday.”
