BBC Factual has commissioned a documentary that offers a “rare and fascinating insight” into young pro-life adults who are “growing in confidence, profile and money” in the UK.

The one-hour documentary, titled “Young, British and Anti-Abortion”, will air on BBC One and iPlayer, though the release date is currently unknown.

According to Daisy Scalchi, Head of Religion and Ethics at the BBC, the programme will be “focussing on how [pro-life] young people especially are taking to the front line of the debate”.

Filmmaker Poppy Jay, who directed the documentary, said: “Immersing myself in the UK Gen-Z anti-abortion movement was an eye-opening experience. There was very little common ground, and I think the abortion debate… will continue to be one of the most divisive issues of not just our time but beyond.”

A BBC press release stated: “In this documentary, Poppy meets the young British people leading anti-abortion campaigns, asking difficult questions and fighting to end access to abortion. Online, on campuses and on the streets, she finds a movement growing in confidence, profile and money.”

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “We hope that this BBC documentary presents a true portrait of young pro-life men and women who are among Britain’s best people.

“SPUC has seen the quality of our young people firsthand at youth conferences and other events, including the March for Life and our own Project Truth roadshow. It is also inspiring to see how well young students deal with the increasing hostility towards pro-life views and values on campuses.

“Pro-life young people are certainly growing in confidence and numbers, thanks in part to the work that SPUC does to support and encourage them online, on campus and on the streets of Britain.

“The power of young people engaging in open, friendly and constructive dialogue with the public should not be underestimated as the pro-life movement moves forward into a brighter future.”
