Xavier Becerra, who has a history of supporting extremist abortion policy and bringing felony charges against pro-life activists, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the nation’s health secretary.
Having served as California’s attorney general, Becerra will now head the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services after being narrowly confirmed 50-49 by the U.S. Senate.
As SPUC reported in December, Becerra was the then President-elect Biden’s first choice to be health secretary.
Now that President Biden has entered the White House, Democrats in the U.S. Senate, including two supposed Democrat pro-lifers, voted to confirm the pro-abortion appointment. The vast majority of Republican senators voted against the nominee.
Becerra has voted in favour of pro-abortion legislation throughout his career.
As Attorney General, Becerra, as well as his predecessor, Vice President Kamala Harris, sought to prosecute pro-life activists, such as David Daleiden, who exposed officials at Planned Parenthood for discussing the selling of fetal tissue and organs harvested from aborted babies.
Attorney General Becerra also insisted that a group of Catholic nuns in California pay for health insurance funding abortion.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “Becerra has no background in medicine. His appointment as health secretary is ideological and single-minded, underlining the extremist pro-abortion position of the Biden administration.
“At a time when the United States is still suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic, the confirmation of an extreme pro-abortion health secretary with no health experience reveals the true priorities of President Biden and the Democrats.”
