Welsh people must act to stop home abortions

The Welsh Health Secretary said he is looking at amending the law to allow home abortions.

SPUC has produced a briefing

It is crucial that Welsh people act now to stop women being hurt by home abortions, SPUC CEO John Smeaton has said.

Home abortions in Wales

Welsh Health Secretary Vaughan Gething said on Tuesday that the abortion pill should be authorised for home use. Mr Gething told Assembly Members: "I have instructed officials to start work immediately on how we can amend the legal framework to allow for the treatment of the termination of pregnancy to be carried out at home."

He added: "My officials will now work with stakeholders to develop a fully-costed and timetabled implementation plan."

Mr Gething's announcement comes in the context of a nationwide push to remove abortion from medical supervision. SPUC is currently challenging the Scottish Government's decision to do this via a judicial review.

Mr Smeaton said: "It is absolutely vital that the people of Wales act now to stop this dangerous proposal. Abortion ends a human life, and allowing it to take place at some further trivialises it. Moreover, removing abortion from medical supervision means it poses an even graver threat to women's mental and physical health.

"That is why we are calling on supporters to write to their Welsh Assembly Member asking them to contact Vaughan Gething to demand that he abandons these proposals. We have produced a briefing giving all the information you need to do this."
