A Conservative MP has told a SPUC meeting that decriminalising abortion would lead to abortion up to birth, on demand, and for gender-selection.

Steve Double, the MP for St Austell and Newquay, made the remarks at a SPUC 2018 Campaign Tour meeting in Newquay on Saturday.

Mr Double told local attendees at the meeting about the current situation in Parliament, and joined SPUC staff Katherine Hampton and Tom Rogers in the discussion and question time.

Dangers of decriminalisation

He said that in his mind there is "no doubt" that the MPs currently calling for abortion in Northern Ireland are really seeking to decriminalise all abortion. Moreover, he said that there will be "far-reaching consequences" if this does happen; decriminalisation would lead to abortion up to birth, and on demand, and abortion for gender-selection. In addition, medical guidelines would replace criminal law on abortion, meaning doctors who didn't follow them wouldn't face any criminal sanctions. He denounced moves to further liberalise abortion as being "fundamentally wrong".

Abortion culture

Mr Double also related some of his personal experiences of life issues. One story that shocked attendees is of friends of his who are currently expecting a baby. Scans show that the baby will be born without one hand. They have been offered an abortion 8 times so far by medical staff.

Katherine Hampton said: "It was really positive to have an MP present who is so engaged with the issues we work on. Some of Steve’s constituents present at the meeting hadn’t known that he is so pro-life, and so this was a great encouragement to them. We look forward to working with him in the future."
