A bill which would have legalised assisted suicide in Scotland has been rejected by 82 votes to 36 following a debate at Holyrood.

The bill had been put forward by the late Margo Macdonald who died from Parkinson's disease last year. A committee recently concluded that the bill had "significant flaws" but that it should be debated by the full parliament. Scottish health secretary Shona Robison had said, "The government believes that the current law is clear, and it is not lawful to assist someone to commit suicide, and the government has no plans to change that."
