SPUC calls upon pro-lifers to lobby European Parliament over pro-abortion report

SPUC is calling upon pro-lifers to lobby the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe prior to a vote this Friday on a pro-abortion report. The report, promoted by Christine McCafferty, the veteran anti-life British MP, promotes abortion as a means of family planning and population control. Ireland For Life, a pro-life group, has said that the so-called guarantees obtained by the Irish government from the European Union (EU) on abortion are "worthless". The group says that the guarantees of Ireland's pro-life laws are not legally binding and could be ignored by the European Court of Justice. Mary Thornton, the organisation's spokesman, said in a press statement: "No to Lisbon is the only means of ensuring the continued protection of the right to life of the child embryo, in Ireland." The head of the Canadian Catholic bishops' conference has called upon Canadians to oppose assisted suicide and euthanasia. In a letter, Archbishop V. James Weisgerber argued that legalising the practices would "result [in] a society even more fragmented, with its members living in greater isolation and anxiety."
