Muscular Dystrophy UK is a national charity which funds research seeking to cure or find treatments for Muscular Dystrophy and to improve lives of those affected. This charity is a member of the AMRC.
The charity’s website contains numerous articles regarding issues surrounding embryonic stem cell research. In 2011, Muscular Dystrophy UK strongly encouraged its supporters to sign a petition against EU regulations to ban patent protection on embryonic stem cell research. The director of research stated "stem cell therapies are more and more becoming a focus withing the scientific community and embryonic stem cell lines are vital for their development." In 2009, the charity spoke out in favour of President Obama’s decision to lift restrictions on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. In addition to this, the charity has revealed its support of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, production of embryonic stem cells with identical DNA to the donor, and ‘cybrid (human-animal) embryo research.
