MPs receive new book to mark 50th anniversary of the Abortion Act coming into force

Friday, marks 50 years since the 1967 Abortion Act came into force (6 months after it received Royal Assent).

The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC), which was founded to fight the Act, is marking the anniversary with the publication of a new book, Abortion Matters, which was distributed to MPs in Parliament.

Antonia Tully, SPUC’s Director of Campaigns, said: "Since the 1967 Abortion Act came into force, nearly 9 million babies have lost their lives to abortion, and countless women have been hurt, both physically and emotionally.

"This is a tragic anniversary, but we wanted to take the opportunity to thank those MPs who have bravely defied the pro-abortion consensus and used their votes and their voices to stand up for unborn babies."

SPUC representatives met with pro-life MPs in Parliament earlier in the week, and gave them a card reading: "Thank you for defending the lives of unborn children and their mothers. To mark the 50th anniversary of the implementation of the Abortion Act 1967, the officers and members of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children would like to thank you for speaking up in Parliament for unborn babies and their mothers, and voting in favour of life." They were also given a copy of Abortion Matters.

MPs from the Conservative, Labour, Scottish Nationalist and Democratic Unionist parties came to meet SPUC.

MPs who are not known to support the pro-life cause, have been sent a card asking them to think of the 9 million unborn babies lost to abortion in the last 50 years.

SPUC’s new book Abortion Matters, edited by SPUC bioethicist Dr Anthony McCarthy, seeks to provide clear, convincing answers to the most fundamental questions relating to abortion, not least: why abortion is always wrong, and how women are also victimised by abortion. It lays out carefully and accessibly what abortion involves, the history of its legalisation and the arguments made both in favour and against.

In the forward, SPUC CEO John Smeaton writes: "I hope that the easy to read, richly-referenced text of Abortion Matters will persuade those who are unsure what to think about abortion that there is an overwhelming case against it; that the book will give much food for thought to those who support abortion; and that those who are opposed to abortion will find in the text which follows many facts, figures, new sources, and well-reasoned arguments to strengthen their pro-life witness."

"This book will provide those who are committed to protecting unborn life with a unique knowledge of the arguments supporting this position. The philosophical, scientific and human rights issues raised by abortion are highlighted and cogently demonstrate that the arc of history is on the side of life." PATRICIA CASEY PROFESSOR OF PSYCHIATRY, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE DUBLIN

"Abortion Matters enlightens, challenges and inspires, providing cogent arguments against an entrenched injustice...Pro-lifers must become the voice of the unborn, as the abolitionists became the voice of the slave; and this book will help them to do it."  ANN FARMER AUTHOR OF BY THEIR FRUITS: EUGENICS, POPULATION CONTROL, AND THE ABORTION CAMPAIGN

"Anthony McCarthy...highlights how a small number of persons in positions of access and authority have acted to normalize the horror of abortion by shrouding its brutality and injustice in misinformation and frank lies strategically fed to the media, judges, legislators, the public, and pregnant mothers and their families...If knowledge and truth can free the masses from the false spell of a few who prosper from the death of innocents, then Abortion Matters will have a major impact." JAMES SHERLEY DIRECTOR OF ASYMMETREX; FORMERLY PROFESSOR IN BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING DIVISION, MIT.
