The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) has responded to an event being held today in Parliament, hosted by the International Planned Parenthood Federation and Gareth Thomas MP, to mark SheDecides Day.
"The two words 'She Decides' are a total misrepresentation of the reality of abortion," said Antonia Tully, SPUC's Director of Campaigns. "Worldwide abortion is frequently coercive. Abortion is not about human rights for women. It's about a global industry which exploits vulnerable women in Britain and in developing countries, both funded by British taxpayers."
She Decides is a global initiative set up in response to the US Government’s reinstating of the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits US funding from being used by organisations which promote abortion. She Decides’ stated aim is to support the "fundamental right [of women] to decide freely and for themselves whether, when and how many children they have".
Organisers of the abortion fund are marking the one year anniversary of the first meeting of the so-called pro-abortion "Global Champions" on March 2, with events across the world.
"Gareth Thomas MP is promoting a social imperialism which seeks to impose the developed world's abortion agenda on the world's poorest women," Mrs Tully continued. "Abortion does nothing to enhance the lives of women. Instead it keeps women in thrall to their cultural, imperialist masters, including the British Government".
In 2016 the Department for International Development (Dfid) spent £334.9 million on overseas aid programmes" for population programmes, abortion and reproductive health in 2016-17". A ComRes poll found that 65% of British adults want to end the spending of British taxpayers cash on foreign abortions.
