The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) has responded to the news that the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health is set to back the campaign to decriminalise abortion.
According to the Times, the body’s "faculty council is expected to vote in favour of a position supporting the decriminalisation of abortion today after a survey of its members found they were 'overwhelmingly' in favour."
Dr Anthony McCarthy, SPUC’s Director of Education and Communications, said: "It is sad that another medical group has betrayed the medical profession and backed the abortion industry’s extreme campaign to, in effect, allow abortion for any reason.
"Members of this body are likely deeply complicit themselves in the degrading act that is abortion: an act which morally harms and numbs those who carry it out, as well as damaging the expectant mother and her unborn baby. Such persons and the ideology they promote in no way represent good medicine nor the thousands of medics who seek to support life and health in ways truly respectful of every human being.
"Our Parliamentarians must not let this blatant self-interest influence public policy. International law recognises the rights of the unborn child, and the British public have indicated in three polls in the last six months that abortion should not be decrimininalised. Those with most to gain from such a law change should be the last to be allowed to influence the debate."
