Vested interests in hybrid embryos hype, says SPUC Westminster, 5th January 2007 - The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) has warned against hype being generated by the government-funded biotech industry, which has a vested interest in destructive embryo research. It has been widely reported that the government and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) are set to prohibit the creation of embryos combining rabbit ova and human cells. Anthony Ozimic, SPUC political secretary, commented: "The supposed benefit of creating human-animal hybrid embryos and then killing them for their stem cells is being exaggerated. This hype is being generated those with vested interests in money from the government's stem cell research fund. Yet again, patients with degenerative diseases are being given false hope and exploited by the profit-hungry biotech industry. Human embryos are full human beings from the moment of their creation, and nothing should be done to destroy human embryos or undermine human dignity."
