Stop promoting abortion, SPUC asks Commission for Africa

Stop promoting abortion, SPUC asks Commission for Africa WESTMINSTER, 1 July - The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children has warned that the Commission for Africa Report, to be brought to the attention of G8 leaders at the Summit in Edinburgh this weekend, promotes the provision of abortion on demand in Africa. The Report calls for 'better sexual and reproductive health services' and investment in these services, which, according to the World Health Organisation's definition of sexual and reproductive health, includes the provision of abortion on demand. John Smeaton, SPUC's National Director said: "Abortion is never a just or humane solution to extreme poverty. Indeed, it is a sign that society is failing its most needy members. The laudable recommendations of the Report, such as investment in education and the provision of clean water and basic health care must not be undermined by the promotion of abortion on demand under the guise of sexual and reproductive health. The people of Africa deserve better than that." "We are contacting political and religious leaders in Africa to warn them about the danger of abortion being promoted in their countries and to encourage them to stand up against this new form of colonialism."
