SPUC asks Mr Blair to promote pro-life policies WESTMINSTER, - The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children has responded to Tony Blair's call for Britain to become 'the science capital of the world' by appealing to the Prime Minister to promote policies that respect the human right to life. John Smeaton, SPUC's National Director, said: "Contrary to media reports, pro-life campaigning organisations such as SPUC have no objection to stem cell research per se and support any ethical research, for example the use of umbilical cord blood, that holds the possibility of finding cures for debilitating diseases. Embryonic stem cell research involves the exploitation and destruction of a human embryo, can never be justified and is legally questionable when there are ethical alternatives available that show considerable promise. Adult stem cells are already used to treat life-threatening conditions such as leukaemia whereas embryonic stem cell research has yet to yield a single therapy. "Tony Blair's stance on issues such as embryo research, cloning and abortion has been consistently anti-life, in spite of his claim to be 'personally opposed to abortion.' He has voted in favour of abortion up to birth on three occasions, promoted the distribution of the morning-after pill to teenagers and given his personal support to legalisation for human cloning. "We call upon Tony Blair to lend his support to policies that are both pro-science and pro-life."
