Other Abortifacients

Various birth control (contraception) methods can cause abortion.

In many cases, people tempted to use a particular birth control method do not wish to do anything that would endanger their embryos. Nonetheless, several artificial contraceptive methods also carry a risk of terminating a pregnancy that has already begun, including:

  • Combined oral contraceptives
  • Progestin-only pills (the ‘mini-Pill’)
  • Combined injectable contraceptives
  • Intra-uterine devices (IUDs)
  • Contraceptive implants
  • Progestin-only injectable contraceptive
  • Emergency Contraceptives
  • RU486 (also marketed as Mifepristone)
