No female births across 132 areas in India
Approximately 15.8 million girls have been killed in the womb through sex-selective abortions in India since 1990, the Population Research Institute (PRI) finds.
The report states that: "Due to a strong, culturally-rooted preference for sons in many parts of the world, millions of girls have been selectively aborted merely because their parents had wanted a boy instead. Since the introduction of ultrasound technology made it easy and affordable for parents to find out the sex of their child prior to birth, the practice of sex-selective abortion became widespread. Most of these selective terminations have occurred either in China or India."
The report highlights:
- Since 1990, approximately 15.8 million girls in India have been eliminated through sex-selective abortion and other forms of pre-natal sex selection.
- Approximately 550,000 girls are selectively aborted every year in India.
- In India today, approximately 111 boys are born for every 100 girls.
- 4.1% of all female live births since 1990 have been prevented through sex-selective abortion.
No Female Births Across 132 Areas
Recent figures from India’s Northern region have exposed the fact that no girls have been born for three months across 132 Indian villages, amidst fears of sex-selective abortions being carried out across the territory.
Indian authorities have revealed that out of 216 children born throughout the past 3 months across the 132 villages, not one female was born. Officials in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand state, have now launched an inquest to investigate the sinister likelihood that sex-selective abortions have been executed throughout the areas, favouring male children and aborting unborn females.
According to ANI, South Asia News Agency, region social workers have indicated that ‘female foeticide’ is being carried out throughout the district with little government interference.
India outlawed sex-selective abortion in 1994; however, the practice of killing unborn females who may be viewed as a financial or cultural burden, and instead favouring the prospect of a male child is still common practice across some Indian regions.
The Universal Attack On Females
Universally there are an estimated 160 million girls ‘missing’ from our world today. Dangerously skewed sex ratios across 28 world countries scandalously point towards the practice of sex-selective abortions.
In countries such as China where a mass cultural preference for males is present, the widescale killing of unborn girls has been prevalent throughout recent decades. Consequently, by next year it is predicted that there will be 24 million Chinese males with no partner due to the eradication of females due to sex-selective abortion.
In their book Half the Sky, Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn warn: "More girls have been killed in the last fifty years, precisely because they are girls than men killed in all the wars of the twentieth century combined."
Sex-Selection Spreading To The UK
Very disturbingly, evidence of sex-selective abortions seeping into the UK has come to light in recent years.
It was only last year that Labour MP, Naz Shah, Shadow Women and Equalities Minister, warned that early blood tests where being used across the UK within ethnic minority communities who had a ‘cultural preference for boys’ to abort pregnancies based on sex.
Similarly, the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, has warned that increasingly widespread Non-Invasive Pre-natal Testing (NIPT), involving early blood tests, could turn the UK into a haven for sex-selective abortions.
Michael Robinson, SPUC Director of Communications said: "What we are witnessing is the discriminatory nature of abortion violently put into practice. Abortion is being used as a physical tool to exterminate the female population, specifically for having the audacity to be female. So often is abortion falsely promoted as a ‘woman’s right’ yet we can clearly see how abortion violently targets, weeds out and kills the female population."
Mr Robinson continued: "It is vital that we make efforts to promote the value and equality of women and girls to combat this assault on their very existence. Abortion is discriminatory in nature and it is time we wake up to the gendercide silently taking place in our world."
