University pro-life society helps support pregnant students by raising money for Alma Mater Fund

6th November 2019

Members of Glasgow Students for Life, The University of Glasgow’s pro-life society, this week hosted a fundraising event in order to raise funds for the Alma Mater fund, a SPUC Scotland initiative which helps, supports and empowers pregnant students.

Since the society officially affiliated in 2019, Glasgow Students for Life (GSL) have been pro-active in offering a culture of life option on campus which supports pregnant and parenting students. GSL believes the Alma Mater Fund to be an “excellent example of practical support being offered to pregnant students who otherwise find themselves facing difficult circumstances alone”.

“An initiative everyone can get behind”

President of Glasgow Students for Life, Joseph Burns said: “We were delighted by the overwhelmingly positive response we received from those who came to the stall to chat to us. It appears regardless of people’s view of ourselves as a pro-life group, this is an initiative everyone can get behind.

“By removing financial pressures from pregnant students, we believe that the Alma Mater Fund will empower women to continue their studies whilst pregnant or parenting. This will help prevent pregnant students feeling pressured to end their pregnancy for financial reasons, thereby offering them the choice to continue with both their studies and pregnancy.

“We can’t wait to see how the Alma Mater Fund will continue to help our fellow students achieve their academic goals whilst pregnant and parenting”.

Alma Mater fund Project Manager, Margaret Akers said: “Thank-you to all the students at Glasgow who have been so effective in promoting and fundraising for the Alma Mater fund. This is a great way to reach out to and support fellow students”.

What is the Alma Mater fund?

The Alma Mater fund is a recent initiative of SPUC being pioneered in Scotland which seeks to support pregnant students in their academic journey.

The Alma Mater Fund will provide financial grants to pregnant university students to support them in pursuing their academic and personal goals. Additionally, the Alma Mater Fund coordinator will be available to sign-post students in the direction of further support available to them, either through the university, government support, or other organisations.
