Attempts to embed assisted suicide into the Isle of Man have failed. SPUC are thanking their supporters for taking action against this now defeated threat. Michael Robinson, SPUC Director of Communications said: "SPUC is ever grateful for their supporters and all who make tireless efforts to defeat the culture of death. On this occasion we thank those of the Isle of Man who assisted in over-turning this deadly threat."
The debate which took place today at Tynwald, the Isle of Man’s Parliament lasted for over five hours with pro-suicide advocates attempting to change the law.
The motion which called for the legalisation of assisted suicide was brought forward by Dr Alex Allinson MHK (Member of the House of Keys) for Ramsey. Dr Allinson said if he finds support in Tynwald, he would seek leave in March to introduce a private members’ bill on the "significant social issue", followed by a public consultation in the summer.
The motion received widespread criticism and the Isle of Man Medical Society have maintained their position opposing assisted suicide.
Michael Robinson added: "A change of law which legalises assisted suicide would place countless vulnerable people at risk. It is vital that pro-life supporters maintain their pro-active attitude to defeat these emerging threats. The victory on the Isle of Man is an encouragement at the time when we are also facing the attempt to promote assisted suicide at Westminster."
Assisted suicide debate in Parliament
An assisted suicide debate is currently ongoing in Parliament today, 23rd of January. Christine Jardine MP introduced the Westminster Hall debate on assisted dying which commenced at 3pm.
Westminster Hall debates give MPs an opportunity to raise local or national issues and receive a response from a government minister. These debates cannot change the law and there is no vote. However, this debate is part of the assisted suicide lobby’s push to change the law, so it is vital that MPs attend and speak against it.
SPUC are monitoring the debate and will update supporters accordingly.
