A teenage mother has expressed her joy after her chemical abortion was stopped by an abortion pill reversal process which saved her baby daughter, giving them a life together. Margaret Akers, Campaign Research Officer said: “SPUC are truly delighted for this brave mother and her daughter. After the first drug is taken, some women change their mind about proceeding with the abortion. It is vital that women who change their mind after taking the first abortion drug are aware that there is still hope for them and their unborn child.”
17-year-old Wisdom was in her final year of secondary school when she discovered that she was pregnant. Wisdom described how a sense of fear soon took over her, especially after being told by her boyfriend that he did not want to keep the baby.
At six weeks pregnant Wisdom booked a chemical abortion appointment at Planned Parenthood. Wisdom took the first drug in the abortion clinic and was told to take the second drug at a later time. However, before Wisdom could take the second drug, her mother found out about the pregnancy and offered the support which would allow Wisdom to keep the baby.
Filled with regret, Wisdom began researching if the effects of the first abortion drug could be stopped.
Wisdom was put in touch with the Abortion Pill Rescue Network and within 12 hours of taking the first abortion drug Wisdom was receiving the care needed to block the effects of the first drug and save her baby.
Wisdom’s healthy and happy baby girl, Queen, was saved by the abortion pill reversal process and was born on May 19th 2020.
Offering a second chance: How does abortion pill reversal work?
Some women may change their minds about proceeding with abortion even after Mifepristone has been taken. Many women seek assistance to help them preserve their unborn children. Medical treatment to help them, using Progesterone, is available.
When effective, Progesterone inhibits the effects of Mifepristone, preventing abortion from taking place in many cases.
Speaking to SPUC, Dr Dermot Kearney said: “If she [a pregnant woman] changes her mind after taking Mifepristone and seeks help, receiving Progesterone in a timely manner within 72 hours after taking Mifepristone, there is a 64-68% chance that the pregnancy will successfully continue to term.
“Most of the information currently available on Progesterone-based abortion ‘reversal’ treatment comes from experience in the USA where it has been available for many years. It is not truly ‘abortion reversal’ but rather ‘abortion preventative’ treatment.
“It is estimated that, to date, it has helped to preserve the lives of hundreds of babies who might otherwise have died by abortion. The treatment is also safe for both the developing foetus and the mother.”
During lockdown regulations caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, medical networks which specialize in abortion pill reversal have seen a surge of emergency calls from women seeking help.
