A woman has spoken out about her heart-breaking abortion experience and described how she was “unprepared for the loss, grief and guilt” that she experienced following the procedure.
Speaking to Her Voice, an online platform which provides women with a space to share their abortion stories, Isobel has described how she was “totally unprepared” for how the abortion would make her feel and said that she received no support afterwards.
“I was totally unprepared”
Isobel said: “I am 62 years old. I had an abortion 40 years ago, before I was married. The foetus was 10 weeks old. It was not a decision I took lightly but taking various issues into account, abortion seemed to be the best option at the time. However, I was totally unprepared for the strong feelings of loss, grief and guilt that I felt afterwards. I received no counselling or follow-up care.”
The impact abortion can have

- A woman who undergoes an abortion is six times more likely to commit suicide than a woman who gives birth.
- A woman is 30% more likely to suffer from depression compared to a woman who gives birth.
- A woman is 25% more likely to suffer from anxiety compared to a woman who gives birth.
- A woman who has had an abortion is at a higher risk of psychiatric admission compared to a woman who gives birth.
