A Christmas song released by a Down’s syndrome charity has taken iTunes by storm after overtaking the music of popular artists including Harry Styles and Sam Smith.
The parent- led charity, Wouldn’t Change a Thing, which focuses on the positive aspects of having a child with Down’s syndrome, released their Christmas track to raise awareness of the chromosomal condition.
The song, What Do You See, was released early by the charity to coincide with the airing of Emmerdale’s controversial new storyline where two characters decide to abort their unborn baby after finding out he/she has Down’s syndrome.
Since its release, the song has managed to climb the charts and has overtaken the music of some of the most popular artists in the UK. The touching track has even managed to climb above the Christmas hit, All I Want for Christmas, by Mariah Carey on the UK Amazon music chart.
Wouldn’t Change a Thing, works to dispel the fear that new parents may have when they receive a Down’s syndrome diagnosis. During 2018 the charity went viral following the success of an emotional carpool karaoke style video featuring children with Down's syndrome and their mums.
SPUC comment
An SPUC spokesperson said: “This song’s success is such joyful news, especially during a time when a popular soap opera is demeaning the lives of people with Down’s syndrome through a harmful abortion storyline.
“We encourage our supporters to consider downloading this Christmas song. All proceeds from the Christmas song will go towards supporting the work of Wouldn’t Change a Thing.”
