New Utah bill requires biological fathers to pay half of pregnancy costs

Biological fathers in the U.S. state of Utah will now be legally required to pay half of their pregnant partner’s pregnancy costs.

Republican Governor Spencer Cox signed the piece of legislation this month, stating that he wanted to pursue legislation to make it easier to bring new life into the world.

The Governor said: “We want to help people and actually be pro-life in how we do it… One of the ways to help with that was to help the burden of pregnancy be decreased.”

The new bill will apply to pregnant woman’s health insurance premiums and any pregnancy-related medical costs. However, it will not oblige the father to pay expenses towards any abortion procedure to which he has not consented.

The bill also stated that if someone’s paternity status is questionable, the father will not be required to pay any support until after the paternity is confirmed.

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “SPUC hopes that the provisions set out in this bill will not only make it easier to bring new life into our world, but will also increase the responsibility for men in caring for that new life.

“In order to displace the culture of death that is festering in our society, and nourish a new culture of life, it is vital that more is done to support pregnant women and empower them to reject abortion and choose life for their child.”
