A Pew Research Centre poll has revealed that the Democratic Party is becoming more supportive of abortion.
The poll, sampling opinions on abortion in the United States, the first since the inauguration of President Biden this year, reveals that 80% of persons who identify as Democrat or lean towards the Democrats believe that abortion should be legal in “all or most cases”. In 2014, that percentage was 67%.
While support for abortion by Democrats has increased, the 2021 poll also reveals that, overall, support for abortion has fallen by one percentage point since last year, with 39% of Americans stating that abortion should be illegal in “all or most cases”.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “The findings of this poll confirm what is already apparent, that the Democratic Party is the party of abortion in the United States.
“As we have seen, President Biden, backed by the Democratic Party, has sought to advance his party’s pro-abortion agenda at every opportunity since his inauguration last January.
“Perhaps the single most cynical action taken by Democrats this year was the passing of the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 Relief Bill, which was used in part to mandate taxpayer funding of abortion-on-demand, as SPUC reported at the time. Even pro-life Democrats felt ‘used and betrayed’ by their leadership.
“The cynical advancement of this bill, ostensibly a response to the pandemic, excluded the language of the Hyde Amendment, a provision that bans the use of federal funding to pay for abortion, except (unfortunately) in instances of rape and incest.
“Up until 2021, the Hyde Amendment had received support from Democrats and Republicans alike.
“Regarding abortion, it is clear that the shameless Democratic leadership, as well as its radicalised support base, are increasingly unwilling to recognise the humanity of the unborn child.
“Indeed, the greatest danger to unborn children in America is currently the Democratic Party.”
