Criminal abortion of baby in Argentina because of disability

The Argentine Fundación Más Vida (More Life Foundation) reports that an illegal late-term abortion was committed on a child of 25 weeks because the baby had a disability.

Raúl Magnasco, president of Fundación Más Vida, has filed a criminal complaint in the Justice of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, stating that an illegal eugenic abortion appears to have taken place.

Significantly, the abortion is said to have taken place illegally at the Hospital Universitário Saavedra, of the Center for Medical Education and Clinical Research (CEMIC), in Buenos Aires.

According to Magnasco, a malformation on the baby’s hand was the only identified issue, suggesting that the reason for the abortion was eugenic and essentially discriminatory.

An investigation into the alleged crime is currently being undertaken.

Abortion up to 14 weeks was legalised in Argentina last year. Women can choose to abort for any reason.

SPUC has reported on a number of disturbing stories to have emerged out of Argentina since abortion legalisation, including the death of 23-year-old student following a legal chemical abortion, as well as the heartbreak of a father who failed to prevent the abortion of his child.

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “Horrifying stories are coming out of Argentina on a regular basis following the legalisation of abortion there last year.

“Choosing whether a child should live or be killed based on the condition of a limb is a disgusting and blatantly discriminatory violation of a baby’s right to life.

“That this crime appears to have taken place in a hospital in Argentina’s capital is particularly disturbing.

“We can see already just how legalisation has engendered a culture of death and discrimination in Argentina.

“Where will it stop?”
