There has been a large increase in women seeking emergency medical assistance by calling 999 after taking abortion pills at home, it has been revealed.
Freedom of Information requests show that ambulance services in the UK have recorded large increases in calls regarding the abortion pill taken at home since April 2020, with callouts doubling in some areas.
Five ambulance services responded to Freedom of Information requests regarding the abortion pill taken without medical supervision following the Government’s “pills by post” scheme, initiated last year, which SPUC has vigorously condemned.
In London, ambulances callouts to women for abortion pill-related cases doubled from seven to 14 a month on average.
The South Western Ambulance Service recorded an even larger increase, with responses to abortion pill callouts having tripled.
Other ambulances services either failed to respond to the Freedom of Information requests or said that they did not record information on abortion pill-related emergencies.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “These disclosures are chilling and are part of a growing pool of evidence revealing the very real dangers of home abortion to women, whose safety is increasingly under threat, especially as the abortion lobby seeks to make DIY home abortion permanent in the UK.
“Complications after medical abortion are four times higher than after surgical abortions, so it is not a surprise that 999 calls have risen exponentially in the past year.
“At a time when DIY home abortion is being promoted in the UK – as the abortion industry and pro-abortion activists take advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to promote their agenda – the sobering facts about the dangerous reality of chemical abortion often go unsaid.
“But SPUC and its supporters have responded to ongoing consultations across the UK regarding home abortion, stating clearly that such dangerous schemes must end immediately.”
