“A national outrage”: 9,789,238 babies killed since the passing of the 1967 Abortion Act

Today marks the 54th anniversary of the 1967 Abortion Act, legalising abortion in England, Wales and Scotland. Since then, 9,789,238 babies have been killed through abortion, in what SPUC’s Michael Robinson, Executive Director (Public Affairs and Legal Services), has slammed as “a national outrage”.

Tomorrow, on 28 October, SPUC’s Annual Torchlight Procession will take place in Glasgow in memory of all lives lost to abortion since 1967.

SPUC is urging all supporters who can make it to attend this year’s procession and be a shining light to the unborn amid the darkness.

Details for the event can be found here.

An ongoing atrocity

In 2020, an average of one baby was lost to abortion every two and half minutes, figures revealed, as abortion reached an all-time high in the UK, with 210,860 unborn babies being killed in England and Wales alone, with 13,815 life’s lost in Scotland.

These figures coincided with the introduction of DIY home abortions in 2020.

Meanwhile, extreme abortion laws have been imposed on Northern Ireland by Westminster, allowing abortion on demand with no conditions up to 24 weeks and abortion up to birth if the baby has a disability.

SPUC has launched legal proceedings against the UK Government over this unconstitutional and undemocratic imposition of abortion. The outcome of the case is expected within the next few weeks.

The safety of mothers is also a growing concern, detailed in Abortion and Women’s Health, a detailed, evidence-based review of the impact of abortion on women's physical and mental health.

SPUC has continued to report the dangers of abortion and the abortion industry’s disregard of women’s safety, including the case of a BPAS clinic in Streatham, which, in 2020, was given the worst safety rating since records began.

Mourning millions of lives

SPUC’s Mr. Robinson said: “Today we mourn the millions of lives lost to the barbaric practice of abortion – a national outrage that must not go unmarked.

“We encourage any of our supporters to attend the Annual Torchlight Procession, if possible, in Glasgow in memory of those lives lost.

“However, we must also remain hopeful for the future.

“We join our loyal supporters up and down the country in continuing to work hard to defend the sanctity and right to life of all.

“While we remember, we must also take action to end abortion.”
