Multiple incidences of “shocking” pro-abortion intimidation of pro-life students on U.S. campuses have been reported in the last few weeks, following similar “extreme” acts in the UK, also reported by SPUC.
One incident occurred at Wellesley College, in Massachusetts, where posters publicising a pro-life event with Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, were disfigured.
Pro-abortion persons scribbled devil horns and fangs on an image of Hawkins on posters and called her a “pig”.
Before her visit, pro-abortion students spread a document of smears and untruths about Hawkins, also attaching a petition demanding that she and the college’s pro-life student group be cancelled. Intimidatory posts were also posted online.
Despite the abuse, Hawkins spoke at the college.
A pro-life display was also attacked at Ohio’s Xavier University around the same time, as well as posters at New Hampshire’s Dartmouth College about the “Truth About Abortion”, including an image of an unborn baby, which was ripped apart or marred with pro-abortion comments.
Chloe Ezzo, vice president of the student Republican club, said: “We’ve never had a response like this… To harass our members and vandalize is authoritarian and their way of trying to silence us.”
Last month, pro-life students in the UK, at Oxford University and Exeter University, were subjected to horrific abuse and intimidation, including the destruction of a pro-life student stall and death threats.
Both incidents were condemned by SPUC.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “This is a reminder of intolerance and bigotry of some pro-abortion students, whose extreme actions are increasingly common on both sides of the Atlantic.
“The abuse, threats and defamations that pro-life students suffer are shocking and intended as intimidatory acts, part of a broader ‘cancel culture’ that has arisen in the West.
“Students and campuses that engage in or enable such abuse, so often directed at pro-life students, speakers and staff, must be held accountable.”
