The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC), the UK’s oldest pro-life organisation, has responded to the news that the US Supreme Court has, today, confirmed its decision to overturn Roe vs Wade, the infamous 1973 ruling that imposed abortion throughout the United States.
SPUC’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) John Deighan said: “This is a monumental day for justice, the rule of law and, most of all, for the US unborn and their mothers.
“This ruling effectively devolves abortion to individual states, so it should not be causing the outrage that we have seen from abortion campaigners. Nevertheless, they know that democratic policies in their own states will lead to the protection of unborn children and mothers, who will no longer have to suffer the trauma of abortion.
“Roe vs Wade has been deadly, enabling a hostile environment that has been harmful to unborn babies, as well as to mothers and their families. Its repeal is a significant step forward and will doubtless save millions of lives. It shows the world that a civilised alternative to abortion is possible. We all have a vital role to play in building a true culture of life, in which every life is respected and where no woman feels that abortion is her only choice.”
On how this decision affects the UK situation, Mr Deighan said: “Of course, we are working in a different legal and cultural context here in the UK, but government has devolved abortion to Scotland in the past without the frenzy from abortion activists that we are seeing now in the US.
“Given the extreme violence displayed by pro-abortion advocates in the weeks since the draft decision was leaked, and the increasing vilification of pro-lifers in the UK, the public can see how the violence of abortion can go hand in hand with political violence. Reasonable people instinctively know violence is wrong, and that is the inherent weakness of abortion and why it will not prevail in the US and elsewhere, including in the UK.”
Mr Deighan concluded: “SPUC supporters and other pro-lifers can take great heart from this decision, which will undoubtedly save millions of lives. It marks the end of the pro-abortion hegemony in the US, and it will positively impact attitudes around the world.
“The impact in the US will, no doubt, be profound, and it is a sure sign that the era of extreme abortion is coming to an end. The scientific fact that life begins at conception is as true here as it is in the US, as is the fact that all those unborn lives should be protected and cherished. SPUC continues to fight towards that goal in the UK.”
