The Duke of Sussex, otherwise known as Prince Harry, has condemned the recent repeal of Roe vs Wade by the US Supreme Court. He was speaking to a half-empty chamber at the United Nations in New York.
Prince Harry, speaking this week at the UN, referred to the overturning of Roe vs Wade as being part of a broader “global assault on democracy and freedom”.
Half of US states are now expected to ban or limit abortion after the Supreme Court overruled the infamous 1973 ruling that imposed abortion throughout the nation. The decision, a “stunning turnaround” for the American unborn, as reported by SPUC, now allows states to decide their own abortion legislation.
The Duke of Sussex’s reference to Roe vs Wade, while not explicitly mentioning abortion, appears to be the first time he has commented on the issue.
“This has been a painful year in a painful decade”, he said, proceeding to decry climate change, the war in Ukraine and the “weaponising [of] lies and disinformation at the expense of the many”.
Prince Harry’s speech, commemorating Nelson Mandela’s birthday, focused in particular on Africa: “It’s where I felt closest to my mother and sought solace after she died… I’ve always found hope on the continent.”
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “Prince Harry’s reference to Roe vs Wade this week was as mistaken as it was absurd, slamming an ultimately democratic and constitutionally legitimate decision (allowing states to decide their own laws) as an ‘assault on democracy’.
“His speech was tragic in more ways than one, attacking disinformation while at the same time being a product of it, as well as commenting on Africa, a continent currently subject to a pro-abortion imperialist campaign funded by Western nations.
“Instead of parading his virtue before a half-empty UN chamber, Prince Harry would do better to redress his ill-informed position on abortion and use his position of influence to fight for the unborn, in Africa and elsewhere.”
