Kansas voters will decide on Tuesday whether to give protection to unborn babies and their mothers in the first abortion referendum in the United States since the overturning of Roe vs Wade.
Should the referendum decide in favour of protecting unborn babies, Kansas legislators will likely ban abortion in the US state. The neighbouring states of Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas have all passed laws restricting abortion.
Political experts have predicted that the people of Kansas are likely to vote in favour of life. Patrick Miller, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Kansas, said: “The only outcome that would shock me is if the no side [those campaigning to keep abortion legal] won easily or comfortably.
“I would not be surprised by a yes vote win because they’ve been better organised.”
If approved, the new constitutional amendment would guarantee protection for the unborn. It could also encourage neighbouring states to legislate similar protections for unborn babies. California, Vermont, Michigan, Kentucky and Montana are also planning to have similar referendums on abortion in the future.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “While it is surprising that the anti-abortion Republican Party is not acting to restrict abortion and instead is putting the issue to a referendum, this strategy could be an excellent opportunity to demonstrate that prevailing public opinion is not pro-abortion, as abortion apologists suggest.
“Our opponents, outraged in the wake of the stunning repeal of Roe vs Wade, claimed that a group of unelected justices were riding roughshod over the rights of women.
“But if the ‘yes’ vote wins this referendum in Kansas, the will of the people will be clearly shown to be pro-life, seeking protection for unborn babies and their mothers, in the first meaningful vote since the overturning of the undemocratic Roe vs Wade ruling in 1973.”
