Birthrate plummets to two-decade low in England and Wales as abortion surges in 2022

There were just 605,000 live births in England and Wales in 2022, the lowest number since 2002, a 3% drop from 2021. Meanwhile, abortion surged in 2022.

There were almost 20,000 fewer births in 2022 than there were in 2021, a fall of 3%, as the birth rate in England and Wales declined to the lowest level in two decades.

The data was released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which showed that the birth rate continues to trend downwards, just as abortion continues to rise.

In June, SPUC reported that abortions in England and Wales had increased by 17% in the first half of 2022, a “shocking” revelation that SPUC in part attributed to DIY home abortion. In total, 123,219 unborn babies were killed in the first six months of 2022.

There was an even bigger increase in Scotland 2022, when there were 16,584 abortions, a rise of 19% compared with 2021.

Earlier this year, Pope Francis attended “The General State of the Birth Rate” conference in Italy, where he commented that low birth rates reflected “a great concern for tomorrow…

“If few are born it means there is little hope. And this not only has repercussions from an economic and social point of view but also undermines confidence in the future.”

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “The connection between surging abortion and declining birth rates is obvious, urged on by Government policy, including the disastrous DIY abortion scheme, and the abortion industry that feeds off the fears of women.

“Abortion idealogues have for decades sold the promise of happiness and so-called liberation, founded on the sacrifice of millions of unborn babies. In England, roughly one in four pregnancies now end in abortion.

“This life-denying ethic rooted in death exposes a culture that diminishes the value of children and family, and ultimately life itself. Society is heading down a dark and dangerous path, though it is not too late to turn back.”
