Bethan Simpson, 27, from Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex, has related how she could not abort “a child I could feel kicking” after a 20-week scan showed her daughter had spina bifida. Antonia Tully, SPUC’s Director of Campaigns said: “All Bethan’s natural instincts told her that her baby’s life mattered more than the disability she had. It’s a wonderful moment in a pregnancy when you feel your baby kicking. Your baby is telling you: ‘I’m here’. For Bethan it seems that her baby came first and the disability came second.”

Indeed, The Lord of the Rings is, in part, a meditation on what may be dubbed Tolkien’s theology of the “the long defeat” – a theology that pro-lifers must themselves embrace, as an informing pro-life ethic, if we are to work towards “final victory”.

Anyone who’s ever got into a debate about abortion will have heard the argument “well, there’s too many people in the world, anyway”. Some people who make this argument will be genuinely concerned about the world’s population and the allocation of resources; but more often, it’s just a way of avoiding the real issues. After all, when considering whether abortion is morally right or wrong, the truth about overpopulation is irrelevant.

SPUC has produced an information sheet for those concerned about whether COVID-19 vaccines are being developed using cells derived from tissue originally taken from an unborn baby.
Dr Anthony McCarty commented: “For those of us who see the original abortion as the unjustified taking of the life of the unborn child, such use of the products of abortion, even a cell line derived from the original tissue, risks sending out a harmful social message concerning the value of early human life.”
