BPAS, the UK’s largest abortion provider, has launched a new attempt to decriminalise abortion – by hijacking the Domestic Abuse Bill going through Parliament. “This is a frankly desperate attempt by BPAS,” said SPUC’s Alithea Williams. “Their amendment is muddled and makes little sense. However, it shows that the abortion lobby never gives up. And we must be ready to fight back.”

The World Health Organisation has updated its guidance regarding essential medical services amidst the Coronavirus pandemic. The updated guidance now promotes abortion as an “essential service” and encourages the expansion of DIY telemedicine abortion with the remote distribution of chemical abortion drugs. Maria Madise, SPUC International Director said: “It is completely unacceptable for the global health agency to promote killing babies as part of its guidance on essential healthcare and governments who care about the life and health of their vulnerable citizens should decidedly denounce WHO’s advice.”

Pro-life campaigners are accusing MPs who voted to impose radical new abortion regulations on Northern Ireland of “a gross abuse of power”.

SPUC says that it will never accept the legislation and has vowed to continue its campaign to repeal the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation etc) Act which decriminalised abortion in the Province. On Wednesday, the House of Commons approved regulations, which critics argue permit abortion virtually on demand during the first six months of pregnancy and, in some cases, up to birth. Speaking after MPs voted by 253 to 136 to back the London Government’s regulations, Liam Gibson, SPUC’s Northern Ireland political officer said:

The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children has described abortion figures for 2019, released today by the Department for Health and Social Care, as “a national tragedy”. 209,519 unborn children were aborted in England and Wales in 2019; the highest number since the Abortion Act came into force in April 1968.

Antonia Tully, SPUC Director of Campaigns, said: “We are looking at a national tragedy here. This appalling figure shows us that abortion is becoming more and more normalised. Propaganda telling women that abortion is ‘simple and safe’ coupled with easier access to abortion pills is driving up abortion numbers.

SPUC has responded to a letter which states: “The Scottish Government is satisfied that taking mifepristone at home is safe.”

In April, John Deighan, CEO of SPUC Scotland, wrote a letter to Jeane Freeman, the Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport, raising a number of concerns about the remote abortions policy.
