Pro-life campaigners are accusing MPs who voted to impose radical new abortion regulations on Northern Ireland of “a gross abuse of power”.

SPUC says that it will never accept the legislation and has vowed to continue its campaign to repeal the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation etc) Act which decriminalised abortion in the Province. On Wednesday, the House of Commons approved regulations, which critics argue permit abortion virtually on demand during the first six months of pregnancy and, in some cases, up to birth. Speaking after MPs voted by 253 to 136 to back the London Government’s regulations, Liam Gibson, SPUC’s Northern Ireland political officer said:

The House of Lords have backed the “extreme” Westminster abortion regime which has been imposed on Northern Ireland, despite opposition from the Stormont Assembly. SPUC Northern Ireland has criticised the decision made by the House of Lords calling it one of a “series of undemocratic events that will impose the most heinous of abortion regimes on Northern Ireland.”

Yesterday evening, the peers voted overwhelmingly in support of the abortion provisions by 355 votes to 77, a majority of 278.

A doctor in the Netherlands has justified killing a 74-year-old woman with dementia by adding a sedative to her coffee, then administering a lethal drug, saying it was “for the best”. The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children has described abortion figures for 2019, released today by the Department for Health and Social Care, as “a national tragedy”. 209,519 unborn children were aborted in England and Wales in 2019; the highest number since the Abortion Act came into force in April 1968.

Antonia Tully, SPUC Director of Campaigns, said: “We are looking at a national tragedy here. This appalling figure shows us that abortion is becoming more and more normalised. Propaganda telling women that abortion is ‘simple and safe’ coupled with easier access to abortion pills is driving up abortion numbers.

SPUC has responded to a letter which states: “The Scottish Government is satisfied that taking mifepristone at home is safe.”

In April, John Deighan, CEO of SPUC Scotland, wrote a letter to Jeane Freeman, the Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport, raising a number of concerns about the remote abortions policy. He urged the Scottish Government to reverse the approval allowing women to take both of the drugs required for a chemical abortion at home, without a physical consultation with a doctor.

Bishop Mark Davies, the Catholic Bishop of Shrewsbury, has condemned the DIY home abortion regime calling it “sinister” and an assault on mothers and babies.

The new DIY home abortion regime was introduced in March 2020 in response to the nationwide lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The regime allows women to get abortion drugs following a telephone call. They are not required to meet with a doctor face to face and the abortion pills are sent through the post. Women are then left to perform their own chemical abortion at home with no medical supervision or support.
