SPUC has released a video tribute to all those who took part in the SPUC Pro-Life Prayer Chain on Monday 27 April 2020. As people were unable to take part in the annual roadside witness, over 1,000 people took part in a prayer chain from their own homes.

“The response to the SPUC Pro-Life Prayer Chain was tremendous”, said Antonia Tully, Director of Campaigns for SPUC. “Prayer united SPUC on 27 April 2020, the anniversary of the implementation of the 1967 Abortion Act. Prayer continues to unite SPUC supporters up and down the country during the lockdown. Thank you so much to everyone who took part.”

A woman, who changed her mind after taking the first abortion drug and underwent abortion pill reversal is now a pro-life advocate and has spoken out against abortion. She said: “I should never have been able to take my son’s life.”

Rita was eight weeks pregnant when she began a chemical abortion to terminate her child’s life. She had taken the first abortion drug, mifepristone, and began hemorrhaging heavily during her journey home from the abortion clinic.

Due to the harm caused by the chemical abortion drug, Rita was hospitalized and required blood transfusions. It was then discovered that the first abortion drug intended to kill her child had not been ‘effective’ and her baby still had a heartbeat.

In my last blogpost I said: “The evidence clearly indicates that the policy of the CBCEW [Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales] – as distinct from the doctrinal position of the Church – is, effectively, to lend support to access to abortion”. The roots of this policy can be found in the England and Wales ecclesiastical authorities’ position on contraception.

Phyllis Bowman, my predecessor as chief executive of SPUC, wrote to Bishop Vincent Nichols (now Cardinal Nichols and President of the CBCEW) on 6th February 1996, expressing concern about a book entitled “How to Survive Being Married to a Catholic”, a Redemptorist publication sold widely through Catholic churches.

The pandemic created by the coronavirus is giving many of us more time to think. The various threats it poses mean that “normal” life has been largely suspended. The daily activities which consume our waking hours are replaced with seriously hard thinking about what to do next, as we seek to rearrange our affairs in the light of sudden restrictions of movement and contact with others, detailed government guidance on personal and general hygiene and a host of sometimes bewildering developments in our family and in our working lives.
