In my last blogpost I said: “The evidence clearly indicates that the policy of the CBCEW [Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales] – as distinct from the doctrinal position of the Church – is, effectively, to lend support to access to abortion”. The roots of this policy can be found in the England and Wales ecclesiastical authorities’ position on contraception.

Phyllis Bowman, my predecessor as chief executive of SPUC, wrote to Bishop Vincent Nichols (now Cardinal Nichols and President of the CBCEW) on 6th February 1996, expressing concern about a book entitled “How to Survive Being Married to a Catholic”, a Redemptorist publication sold widely through Catholic churches.

The pandemic created by the coronavirus is giving many of us more time to think. The various threats it poses mean that “normal” life has been largely suspended. The daily activities which consume our waking hours are replaced with seriously hard thinking about what to do next, as we seek to rearrange our affairs in the light of sudden restrictions of movement and contact with others, detailed government guidance on personal and general hygiene and a host of sometimes bewildering developments in our family and in our working lives.

Yesterday, on Monday 27 April, over one thousand pro-lifers around the UK came together in a national act of private witness as they took part in SPUC’s Pro-Life Prayer Chain to remember the 9 million lives lost to abortion in Britain, and pray for an end to abortion.

A premature baby girl from Scotland has recovered after contracting COVID-19, making her the country’s youngest COVID-19 patient. Her mum has described her as “the most precious person in the world.”

Baby Peyton Maguire was born prematurely on March 26th in Lanarkshire, weighing just over 3lb.

Peyton was delivered prematurely by cesarean section after her mum, Tracey, was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia. Peyton was cared for in University Hospital Wishaw, where she spent the first weeks of her life on an incubator.

Pro-life leaders are preparing to step up their campaign for an abortion ban in Northern Ireland after advertising watchdogs cleared a controversial billboard campaign following complaints.

SPUC has welcomed the suspension of IVF procedures in the United Kingdom, as the country battles against the Coronavirus Pandemic. Michael Robinson, SPUC Director of Communications said: “SPUC welcomes the decision to suspend IVF procedures during the COVID 19 pandemic; however, we call on the government to outlaw IVF on a permanent basis.”

An announcement earlier this week confirmed that all new IVF procedures have been banned during the Coronavirus outbreak. Both the NHS and private clinics have been instructed by the governing body, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), to halt all procedures.

In April, 2019, SPUC launched a final, last ditch, effort in the House of Lords to stop compulsory Relationships Education in primary schools, and Relationships and Sex Education in secondary schools, pointing out to our supporters the sad reality that “despite the mounting public opposition, especially from parents”, the House of Commons had voted to approve the regulations… which deny parents the right of withdrawal, by a large margin (538 to 21).”

In a blogpost for the Journal of Medical Ethics, Dr Ilaria Bertini,​ Research Fellow at Bios Centre, London, has questioned the motive behind the introduction of emergency DIY home abortion legislation by the British government in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, while also citing three major “drawbacks” to DIY abortion.
