Abortion pills... Not safe or simple

Not safe or simple

SPUC's campaign to expose the dangers of abortion pills and oppose the further normalising of abortion through the promotion of self-administered non-surgical abortions

  • Around the world abortion is undergoing a major change: abortion pills used in so-called medical abortions have overtaken surgical abortions.
  • Abortion pills are never safe for the unborn baby, who they are designed to kill, and they are harmful for women.
  • Abortion pill use is widespread in the UK. Current policy promotes women taking at least one abortion pill away from a medical setting, increasing the risks to women.

Further information

In 2018, 71% of abortions in England and Wales were medically induced. This is higher than in 2017 (66%), and almost double the proportion in 2008 (37%). In Scotland, 86.1% of terminations (at all gestations) in Scotland were performed medically in 2018 compared to 83.6% in 2017.

This shift is being driven by ideological goals including, in the proponents’ words, ‘empowering women’ through:

  • The widest possible availability of abortion
  • Self-managed or do-it-yourself abortions
  • Reducing the involvement of medical professionals

Each of these goals actually plays into the hands of an abusive partner wanting to coerce a woman into having an abortion on the grounds that it’s so easy she can virtually do it herself now. There is also the possibility that women could be physically forced to take the abortion pills.
