U.S. House of Representatives passes $1.9 trillion COVID Relief Bill that could be used to fund abortion

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a “radical” $1.9 trillion COVID-19 Relief Bill that, as one congressman has said, “mandates taxpayer funding of abortion-on-demand”.

The rescue plan was passed 219-212, with the vast majority of Democrats voting in support of the Bill, while Republicans voted against it.

The Bill, funding vaccines, testing and economic relief, refused to rule out funding abortion, unlike a similar bill last year.

Several members of the House of Representatives attempted to work in the language of the Hyde Amendment, a provision that bans the use of federal funding to pay for abortion, except for instances of rape and incest.

Last year, a COVID-19 relief bill included provisions against the use of relief funding for abortion services, including Planned Parenthood affiliates. This time, 206 members of the House attempted to introduce the same prohibition, but were voted down by Democrats who, as a result of the 2020 election, hold a slim majority.

Pro-life politicians and activists, as well as the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, have warned that the funding, now passed by the House, could be used to fund abortion.

Republican Congressman Chris Smith, who argued in the House for a prohibition, said that “Unborn babies, Madame Speaker, need the President of the U.S. and members of Congress to be their friend and advocate, not their adversary”.

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “In November, SPUC reported on the several abortion giants, including Planned Parenthood, who celebrated President Biden’s election victory. The fruits of that victory are now becoming apparent.

“In the wake of President Biden’s victory, it seems that Democrats are using the COVID-19 pandemic as a Trojan horse to sneak federal abortion funding into U.S. legislation.

“It is disgraceful how politicians in the U.S., but also in the UK, are using a crisis to pursue their pro-abortion agenda. As we have seen in Britain, the government may now make DIY home abortion legislation permanent.

“The cynicism of pro-abortion activists and legislators has never been so apparent.”
