Baby given little chance of survival celebrates birthday on Prematurity Awareness Day

One year ago, the Thompson’s welcomed their son Pádraig at 26 weeks gestation, more than two months early, weighing only 424 grams. He was given little chance of survival due to his size. But, one year later, his first birthday coincided with Prematurity Awareness Day on 17 November.

Following his birth, Pádraig spent 110 days in hospital, undergoing 15 blood transfusions and surgery. He was discharged from the hospital on 10 March, just two weeks before the initial lockdown.

His mum, Lisa, who is a neo-natal nurse, said of the experience:

“Watching him make progress after his birth became a hope. We didn’t have much hope before he was born. We weren’t given much hope. For him to make it and still be here is a blessing.”

There are so many ups and downs from the minute you have your baby, whether it is early or at term. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, you will get there together. Just look at Pádraig, there is hope.”

SPUC Comment

An SPUC Spokesperson said: “It is wonderful to celebrate the survival of this little boy against all odds – particularly on Prematurity Awareness Day. His life is so precious, and his family have endured so much to reach this milestone. May their story bring hope to many families struggling at this time.”
