Joe Biden, who is likely to become the President of the United States on 20 January, is to appoint Xavier Becerra, California’s Attorney General, to take control of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Becerra has a history of supporting abortion and bringing felony charges against pro-life activists.
As Attorney General, Becerra sought to prosecute pro-life activists such as David Daleiden who exposed officials at Planned Parenthood for discussing the selling of fetal tissue and organs harvested from aborted babies.
A warrant to search Daleiden’s apartment had been issued by Becerra’s predecessor, Kamala Harris, who is now set to be Biden’s vice-president.
Jeanne Mancini, president of the March for Life, has said that Becerra “has a long and hostile record towards pro-life Americans”.
Becerra also supported a law that sought to force pro-life pregnancy centres to inform patients that abortion was covered by the state of California. This law was eventually struck down by the Supreme Court.
Becerra has voted in favour of pro-abortion legislation throughout his career.
SPUC comment
A SPUC spokesperson said: “Joe Biden’s Department of Health and Human Services pick comes as no surprise, especially after appointing extreme pro-abortion candidate Kamala Harris to be his vice-president.
“Becerra simply confirms what pro-lifers have feared, and indeed predicted, that Biden’s presidency will be fervently pro-abortion and anti-life.
“As we can see, elections have consequences, especially for the unborn and even religious liberty. Most recently, Becerra insisted that a group of Catholic nuns, the Missionary Guadalupanas of the Holy Spirit, should pay for health insurance that funds abortion, as reported by SPUC in February.
“What will Becerra, as part of Biden’s presidency, insist on next?”
