It is vital this bill is defeated.
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children is asking supporters to contact their MPs as a matter of urgency to defeat a dangerous new abortion bill.
Diana Johnson, the Labour MP for Hull North, is introducing a bill which seeks to remove criminal sanctions for abortion, in other words to decriminalise abortion.
The bill is being introduced under the Ten Minute Rule. Such bills are used to raise a particular issue in the House of Commons and do not generally reach the statute book. However, the outcome of Ms Johnson's bill will be significant in terms of future parliamentary action by the pro-abortion lobby.
Ms Johnson introduced a similar bill last year, and while it ran out of parliamentary time, the fact that a majority of MPs voted in favour emboldened the pro-decriminalisation lobby.
Targeting the basic legal protection against abortion
Ms Johnson wants to repeal Sections 58 & 59 of the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act. This Act is the primary law which governs abortion in Northern Ireland. This is also the basic legal protection against abortion in England and Wales.
If Ms Johnson is successful on 23 October, this could lead to changes in the law which would remove any effective legal protection for unborn babies and their mothers in Northern Ireland and also in England and Wales.
Changing the 1861 Act would leave vulnerable women at greater risk from abusive men, open up commercial opportunities for online and over-the-counter abortion pill sales, creating a 'back street' abortion culture, and leave virtually no protection for freedom of conscience for medical professionals.
Campaign with us
SPUC have produced campaign postcards enabling members to send a message to their MP urging him/her to vote against Diana Johnson's bill. The Society is also asking members to distribute the postcards among family and friends, and at churches.

Antonia Tully, SPUC's Director of Campaigns, said: "This bill is the most severe threat to the lives of unborn babies and the welfare of their mothers, in decades. It is vital we defeat it."
