Policy choices must centre on the protection of human dignity, the eradication of poverty, and the safeguarding of vulnerable women. SPUC are calling for 5 critical policy interventions designed to eliminate coercion, protect women’s health, expand financial support to low-income families, and invest in compassionate end-of-life care.

We believe that the following 5 asks of the Scottish Government will better support women, the unborn, families and the most vulnerable in our society.

Our 5 Key Asks for Scotland

1. Pre-Natal Scottish Child Payment

We seek the extension of the Scottish Child Payment to pregnant mothers starting from the 24th week of pregnancy. It includes a targeted £500 grant for eligible mothers in their final trimester to assist with the costs associated with preparing for a new child.

2. Legislation Against Coercion

We want to see a specific criminal offence for the coercion of a woman into having an abortion. The goal is to provide legal safeguards and mandate screening processes to ensure the agency and safety of all women.

3. Ending Remote Abortion (Telemedicine)

The objective is to end the “pills-by-post” framework. This would require face-to-face clinical consultations to ensure direct medical oversight, facilitate screening for safeguarding risks, and provide immediate care in the event of complications.

4. Opposing Abortion Expansion

We want the Scottish Government to rejection the recommendations within the Scottish Abortion Law Review. These include allowing abortion up until birth, the repeal of the Concealment of Birth (Scotland) Act, and the removal of the requirement for two doctors to sign off an abortion.

5. Investment in Palliative Care

SPUC advocates for substantial new funding for Scotland’s palliative and hospice care sectors. Expanding these services aims to provide comprehensive pain management and emotional support for those facing terminal illness.
