Over 200 rally in defence of unborn at Edinburgh pro-life chain

SPUC’s 2024 Edinburgh pro-life chain saw over 200 people come together to remember every life lost to abortion in the UK since the passing of the 1967 Abortion Act.

Pro-life men and women, gathered peacefully on Lothian Road near Edinburgh Castle where they held signs including, “Defend Life” and “Ban Abortion – Protect Unborn Babies”.

The annual event, organised by SPUC, was one of several well-attended chains that took place across the UK.

Since the implementation of the 1967 Abortion Act on 27 April 1968, over ten million unborn babies have been killed by abortion in the UK.

Abortion surged to an precedented level in England and Wales in 2022, when there were 123,219 abortions between January and June, reported compared with same period in 2021.

Scotland saw an even bigger increase in 2022, when there were 16,584 abortions in twelve months, a rise of 19% compared with the previous year, as reported by SPUC.

SPUC comment

A SPUC spokesperson said: “It was wonderful to see so many people gather in defence of life, especially at a time when abortion is claiming more lives than ever before in the UK. Unborn children are not forgotten, and it’s so important that their lives are not reduced to cold statistics.

“Each life lost to abortion is a future cruelly stolen, a name extinguished forever, if that child ever had a name at all. What matters is that they existed and had a right to life. SPUC will continue to stand for this truth and work towards a world where abortion is unthinkable.

“While there are still good people willing to make a stand for what is right, whatever the obstacles might be, good will ultimately prevail.”
