In an article published on an Australian website, the anonymous woman recalled how relieved her sonographer was when she said she didn’t want to know the gender of her baby.
The woman, who was pregnant with her second child, found out from the sonographer that parents sometimes react negatively to gender reveals.
“I’ve had dads storm out because the baby is a girl; pregnant women left sobbing on the table”, the sonographer told the journalist. “Some are so disappointed, they terminate [abort] based on the gender…
“I know this, because they come back to me for the ultrasound evaluation to confirm they are no longer pregnant.”
The “100% pro-choice” journalist writes that “I didn’t think it happened based on gender… This blows my mind.”
After discovering research that backed up the sonographer’s claims, the journalist commented that “as a mother to two daughters, the idea that women may feel pressured into having an abortion after discovering they’re having a girl breaks my heart”.
Millions of missing girls – the cost of sex-selective abortion
In 2022, SPUC reported that gender ratio statistics indicate that girls are being targeted for abortion in Australia. While 102 and 106 boys are born for every 100 girls – a global average of 105.5 (in 2020) – the rate for boys in Australia was found to be 109.
Sex-selective abortion is widespread around the world, particularly in India and China, which, according to the UN Population Fund, account for more than 90% of missing female births.
A doctor and his assistants in India were recently arrested after allegedly performing 900 sex-selective abortions on girls. While sex-selective abortion is illegal in India, the practice is still common. India is believed to have 63 million fewer women because of abortion, and reported.
An investigation by the Independent also found evidence of sex-selective abortion in the UK, estimating that it has in the UK.
We need “a worldwide preference for life”
Daniel Frampton, SPUC’s Editorial Officer, said: “There is an inherent contradiction in being ‘100% pro-choice’ while also lamenting how many unborn babies, especially girls, are aborted because of their gender.
“The journalist, unable to escape her pro-abortion ideology, still views such gendercide through the lens of women’s choice rather than the inherent right to life of the unborn, despite seeing her daughter as a ‘precious gift’.
“Though the journalist’s views are confused, her shock and questioning following the sonographer’s account are at least a step in the right direction. One hopes that she will continue to question the so-called ‘pro-choice’ line: why should her heart break if unborn children, according to her stated ideology, are worth nothing more than what their parents decide they are worth?
“In the end, abortion is unacceptable not only when the baby is a girl, but because all unborn lives deserve life. Let’s replace the ‘cultural preference for sons’ with a worldwide preference for life.”
