Abortions down for the first time since the end of Roe

For years, abortion advocates in the United States have claimed that the overturning of Roe vs Wade in 2022 would only drive abortion numbers higher, forcing women to travel across state lines in order to access the procedure. Yet the latest figures suggest something different is beginning to take place.

According to research published by the Guttmacher Institute, the first six months of 2025 saw a decline in the number of abortions provided by clinicians in states without near-total bans. About 518,940 abortions were recorded in that period, representing a fall of five per cent compared with the same months in 2024. Even more striking is the drop in the number of women crossing state borders to obtain abortions, which has fallen by eight per cent year-on-year.

These statistics mark a reversal of the trend reported after Roe was overturned. Abortion numbers initially rose, climbing by eleven per cent in 2023 compared with 2020. The following year saw only a marginal increase. Now, the downward shift is plain to see. In some states, the decline has been dramatic. Florida, which introduced a six-week abortion ban in 2024, recorded twenty-seven per cent fewer abortions this year than last. Illinois, long considered a hub for women travelling from restrictive states, has seen a marked decrease in out-of-state patients, accounting for much of the state’s overall reduction.

Pro-abortion commentators have been quick to suggest that the rise of so-called shield laws and the increased use of abortion pills by post have masked the true scale of abortion. Yet even they admit that travelling to obtain an abortion has become a heavier burden. Financial strain, new restrictions, and the moral reality of what abortion entails may all be influencing women’s decisions.

From a pro-life perspective, this development is significant. For decades, America’s abortion industry has expanded relentlessly, aided by permissive laws and bad political actors. Now, with Roe consigned to history, a cultural shift may be taking root. Declining numbers suggest that more women are finding alternatives to abortion, whether through practical support, the courage to continue their pregnancy, or the increasing visibility of the pro-life message.

While campaigners for abortion on demand lament these changes, pro-lifers should take heart. Every reduction represents not just a statistic but lives preserved and futures given a chance. The fight is far from over, but this turning tide offers hope that the United States is slowly beginning to choose life; may we do the same.
