A wave of U.S. state legislation now mandates that public school students view videos or ultrasounds illustrating foetal development, providing important biological insight. Since Roe v. Wade’s fall, pro-life advocates in at least 22 states have introduced such bills, with seven already passed.
Key among the materials is the animated video “Meet Baby Olivia”, produced by Live Action. A growing number of states require this, or similar foetal development videos, to be shown in middle and high school sex‑education classes.
SPUC welcomes initiatives that provide insight to the development of babies in the womb and foster awareness of early human life. It is important that education on foetal development should form part of broader efforts to affirm human dignity at all stages and ensure that young people see the reality that life begins before birth.
SPUC also emphasises that such educational tools must be accurate, respectful, and age‑appropriate. Moreover exposure to foetal imagery should not stand alone. Pro‑life outreach in schools should also include support for pregnant and parenting students including access to crisis pregnancy advice, a vital service that SPUC offers through the Alma Mater Fund.
The recent developments in education policy mark a pivotal moment, presenting facts about prenatal humanity in schools can play a key role in shaping long-term cultural attitudes.
In SPUC’s view, foetal development education in schools holds good promise, if it is delivered responsibly, ethically, and aligned with genuine care. When grounded in truth and linked to life‑affirming services, it can help young people understand and value life from conception to natural end.
