Vast majority of young American voters against abortion up to birth, poll finds

abortion up to birth

A new poll has found that just 9% of young Americans believe that abortion up to birth should be permitted for any reason. Commenting on the poll, SPUC said: “It’s clear that young adults reject abortion extremism, which might have had a role in swaying the vote away from the pro-abortion Democrat Party in last November’s presidential election.”

The poll, carried out by the Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement, surveyed 1,485 American voters between the ages of 18 and 42 earlier this month about abortion policy.

While two-thirds (67%) of respondents supported some form of restrictions on abortion, only 9% were in favour of allowing abortion up to birth for any reason, including babies born after a failed abortion attempt.

The age range, focusing on Gen Z and millennial adults, represented almost half of the US electorate (as of 2025).

63% of these surveyed adults supported a ban on abortion after 12.5 weeks of pregnancy, and 66% agreed that abortion should be banned after 24 weeks.

60% said that human rights begin in the womb, while 25% said that human rights only began after birth.

Young adults were roughly split on whether Planned Parenthood, the US abortion provider, should be funded by the taxpayers, with 48% saying it should.

Almost one-third (31%) of respondents also said that they’d be more willing to support abortion limits if policies were in place to support mothers of newborn babies, including paid family leave, child tax credits, subsidies and other support measures.

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, which commissioned the poll, said: “Our poll details common ground, serious concerns, and bad news for Planned Parenthood, the nation’s number one abortion vendor…

“After a contentious election in which the Democratic Party offered basically one assurance, that the number of abortions would increase and that taxpayers would fund it, young voters pulled back.”

“Young adults cannot be fooled”

Daniel Frampton, SPUC’s Editorial Officer, said: “It’s clear that young adults reject abortion extremism, which might have had a role in swaying the vote away from the pro-abortion Democrat Party in last November’s presidential election.

“UK politicians should take note, since Britons of all ages also baulk at the thought of abortion up to birth, a barbaric and unconscionable act of violence that kills an unborn child. Young adults cannot be fooled into believing that killing a child at the point of birth is right.

“Still, there are some politicians in the UK, supported by the abortion industry and its apologists, who still seek to decriminalise abortion, doing so under the guise of women’s rights, even if that means killing a baby just as it’s about to be born.

“Just as there is little support for such extremism in the US, the British public has consistently rejected abortion up to birth, which many people rightly consider a savage act that can’t be justified in any circumstance.

“Rather than killing unborn babies, what people want to see is help offered to mothers, especially those women in crisis pregnancies. If politicians really care about women, they would be doing all they can to offer them every possible incentive not to have an abortion.”
