Houston Midwife Indicted on 15 Felonies: A Stark Reminder of Why Abortion Must Be Resisted

In a development that underscores the pro-life case for protecting both women and unborn children, Texas authorities have charged a midwife, Maria Rojas, with 15 felony counts for allegedly performing illegal abortions and practising medicine without a licence. The case should galvanise supporters of life in their ongoing mission to defend the most vulnerable.

According to the indictment, Maria Rojas is accused of three counts of performing illegal abortions and twelve counts of practising medicine without a licence. She is alleged to have given abortion pills to a woman known as “E.G.” and performed an abortion on another, “N.M.,” in which “the unborn child died.”

Moreover, it is claimed that Rojas operated multiple facilities, Clinica Waller Latinoamericana, Clinica Latinoamericana Telge, and Latinoamericana Medical Clinic, employing staff to treat, diagnose and prescribe medications, despite not being a licensed physician. These actions allegedly breached state law and risked the health and lives of women as well as the unborn.

From a pro-life standpoint, this case is deeply significant. First, it highlights the legal and moral consequences when abortion provision is moved outside regulated medical environments. Unlicensed care, as alleged here, increases risks for mothers and can lead to outcomes no humane society should accept.

Second, the case demonstrates that even where abortion is heavily restricted, as in Texas, there remain individuals willing to circumvent the law. This underlines SPUC’s warnings that laws alone are not enough: vigilance, public awareness, and strong legal enforcement are essential components of protecting unborn life.

Third, it raises questions about exploitation: women in vulnerable situations may be deceived or coerced into unsafe procedures, or misled about the credentials of those providing services. A pro-life approach insists that protecting women is inseparable from protecting unborn children.

SPUC has long emphasised that every human life is sacred from conception. Cases like the Rojas indictment bolster SPUC’s advocacy: for stronger legal protections, for more rigorous regulation of medical practice, and for education so that women understand the risks and moral stakes of abortion.

The indictment of Maria Rojas is more than a legal matter, it is a moral bellwether. It highlights the dangers when the unborn are dehumanised, when medical practice operates outside proper oversight, and when laws protecting life are flouted. For SPUC and the wider pro-life movement, this case reaffirms the urgency of their work: to protect unborn children, to safeguard women, and to ensure life is cherished from its earliest moment.
