The Northern Irish Department for Health have released their annual abortion statistics. The number of abortions performed between April 2024 and March 2025 have risen by 3.7% compared to the same period in 2023/24.

Northern Ireland used to be one of the few safe-havens for unborn babies left in Europe, until the Labour MP for Walthamstow, Stella Creasy, hijacked the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation) Bill.

Her private member’s amendment stated that a UN report by the Convention for the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), which recommended the total decriminalisation of abortion, must be enacted if the Northern Irish Executive hadn’t come to a governing agreement by the following October.

Despite this convention being in no way binding on member states, the legislation was passed, meaning protections for the unborn in NI went from being the most stringent to the most liberal in Europe overnight.

SPUC, and many other pro-life voices, warned that decriminalising abortion in Northern Ireland would lead to a consistent increase in elective abortions and change the way the culture saw children, motherhood, and life. The statistics released today showcase that perfectly.

Total Abortions2,7952,899
Abortions on Minors7274
Surgical Abortions198 (7.1%)322 (11.1%)
Abortions Post 10-Weeks196 (7%)345 (11.9%)

As previously mentioned, the total number of abortions have risen by 104 (3.7%), but we have also seen an increase in abortions performed on girls under-18, rising by two from 72 to 74. On top of that, the number of surgical abortions have risen from 198 to 322, an increase of 124. Finally, abortions performed after ten-weeks have risen from 196 to 345, an increase of 149.

SPUC’s Public Policy Manager, Alithea Williams, says “It is very sad to see the numbers of abortions in NI keep going up. As we warned from the beginning, it is clear that changing the law has a real impact on abortion numbers, and these are not just numbers we are talking about – these are real babies whose lives have been lost, and real mothers who are impacted.”
