The NHS North Central London Integrated Care Board is proposing to close at least one maternity unit because of declining birth rates in the London boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington. A consultation has been launched into the proposed closure.
Dr Jo Sauvage, the chief medical officer on the Board, told the BBC that half of the neonatal cots at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead were empty at any given time.
Meanwhile, births in Scotland fell by 7.5% between 1 July and 30 September 2023 when compared with a five-year average for the same period, according to data from the National Records of Scotland (NRS). From October to December 2022, deaths were also reported to outnumber births in Scotland.
More abortions, less births
Earlier this year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) 20,000 fewer births the lowest number of births in England and Wales since 2002. There were 20,000 fewer births in 2022, a drop of 3% from 2021, as 20,000 fewer births by SPUC.
At the same time, there was a reported in the first six months of 2022 in England and Wales, with 86% of the 123,219 unborn babies being killed by chemical abortions, most of which took place at home. In Scotland, reported in 2022.
Pope Francis, who attended the “The General State of the Birth Rate” conference in Italy earlier this year, stated that falling birth rates are a sign of “a great concern for tomorrow…
“If few are born it means there is little hope. And this not only has repercussions from an economic and social point of view but also undermines confidence in the future.”
A warning to a society that no longer cherishes life
SPUC’s Michael Robinson, Executive Director (Public Affairs and Legal Services), said: “As abortion continues to rise exponentially, we can expect to see the birth rate fall even further, which will itself have dire consequences for the UK.
“Feeding off the fears of mothers and the Government’s disastrous DIY at-home abortion scheme, pro-abortion ideologues have diminished the value of life and replaced it with a world where one in four pregnancies now end in abortion – and they call this liberation.
“But abortion comes at a terrible cost, not only in unborn lives, but also in terms of a loss of perspective, about what really matters, and the wrong direction a society takes when it no longer cherishes life.
“It is important to note that this situation is not normal, and nations, not only the UK, must wake up to the mortal threat that abortion poses to the wellbeing of society.”
